Have you Considered a Clothing Swap?

Maybe you have too many clothes, you're bored with your clothes, or have clothes that no longer (or never did) fit the way they should.

Grab a handful or two of friends (and their friends) - 10-15 people is a good goal to aim for, give or take a few. Different shapes and sizes is ok too. Pick a night to meet and ask everyone to bring clothes they no longer want (clothing of all seasons is ok).

That night, everyone should dump thier clothes into one pile and start picking through to find things they like that someone else brought.

Be sure to have 2 full-length mirrors (or more) available - at some point during the swap, everyone must try on the clothes they picked to make sure it is a good fit - otherwise, it goes back in the pile for someone else to consider. Some groups have "try-on" rooms available, while others just ask the women to wear bodysuits to try the clothes on regardless of separate rooms.

If 2 people want the same item, you can have lots of fun by having them both try on the item and have the group vote who it looks best on. If you're uncomfortable doing this, have a coin toss.

Maybe you find something great...or several things...or nothing at all. If you do the swap often enough, let's say every 6 months, you will find it is worth doing. The best part is all the fun you will have - lots of laughs and stories...and the clothes are free!

All leftover clothes should be brought to a donation bin. Feel free to comment on my post if you have done a clothing swap to share your experience and tips.

Some have even had a swap for children's clothes. Whichever you choose, have fun with it!

A New Twist on an Old Favorite

Who doesn't like Mac & Cheese? Do you and/or your kids eat it often enough for you to be concerned about it's nutritional value? Unless you're eating it as a side dish, turn it into a meal!

Throw in some frozen veggies as your water is boiling, then add a can of drained tuna, OR diced ham OR shredded chicken (leftovers from last night's dinner, perhaps) and there you go...a well-rounded meal!

I also add frozen veggies to my Hamburger Helper (or Tuna Helper). For $1/box (store brand) it's an inexpensive and easy meal.

Reading Magazines on a Budget

You like to read magazines. Some cost alot...some don't. Either way, I ended up with some magazines someone gave me - a whole year's worth that they saved for something, then decided they didn't need them anymore. Redbook, Family Fun magazine, Parenting magazine...you get the idea. I took them off her hands and have been flipping through them.

Honestly, unless you're looking for the latest fashion trends, these articles don't "expire" that quickly. I read about family issues, relationship issues, kid's crafts, and recipes... even though the info was about a year old, it still seemed current.

Save yourself a few dollars (not to mention some trees) and ask around - find out what your friends, family, and neighbors are reading...and see if they are willing to pass their magazines on to you when they're done with them. I even put in a "Wanted" request on Freecycle.org and get magazines for free from someone local who is done reading them. Try it and let me know what you think.

Smaller is Not Always Less Expensive

So, I decided I wanted chocolate ice cream...(I don't usually prefer chocolate ice cream, but I guess pregnancy does weird things to me)...as I was doing my groceries at Market Basket, I decided that I would pick-up a "small" container of it, thinking I'd save money. After all, I probably would get sick of the chocolate ice cream if I had to eat a whole half-gallon because my husband doesn't like chocolate ice cream at all.

Well, the only "small" containers of chocolate available was Haagen-dazs. A pint was $2.99, vs a half-gallon of Hood or Market Basket Premium was $2.50. Guess which one I picked? The half-gallon, of course. Turns out to be a better decision than I thought. Not only did I save money, but my craving for it hasn't gone away yet...

A Note About Getting Something For Free...

Even if YOU wouldn't normally use one of the free products I've listed, I encourage you to get them anyway and then donate them to your local charity. You can feel good about contributing and helping someone in need, when all it cost you was a little legwork.

Get these for FREE!!!

If you happen to be at Walmart, Walgreens, or Target, bring these coupons and pick these up!

Be sure to use your $1 off coupons from SmartSource.com on travel sizes whenever possible...today I got 2 travel-size Clean & Clear facial wash from Walmart or Target for FREE because I had a $1 off coupon for each, and they are selling for $0.97 (at Walmart).

At Walgreens, you can get Pilot V5 Pens for $1.99. Use the $1 off/1 Walgreens coupon from August coupon booklet (you can find it at the door as you walk into Walgreens) and couple that with this $1 off/1 printable coupon here.

You can also use the $1.00 off 3M manufacturer coupon found here to get 3M sticky Notes for FREE at Target this week as they sell sticky notes for $1. These are also offered at a low price at Walmart and Kmart.

Thanks to MoneySavingMom.com for the tips!

Cheap or Free Movies at the Theatre!

Don't forget to check your local cinema to find cheap or free movies for kids during the summer...these are the 2 I know about:

AMC Theatre - They call is "Summer Camp". This will be the last week for this (Tuesday, Aug 10). 10AM there will be a mystery kid's movie showing for $1 admission (ticket price is same for kids and adults). Don't forget to get the Kid's Snack Pack...a small drink, kid-size, popcorn, and gummies...a better value than getting a small popcorn and regular drink.

Regal Cinemas - They call it "Free Family Film Festivals. 10am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check your local thtre listings to find out what's playing. I believe these run through the 18th and 25th of August, and they're FREE!
